Why it worked
Stand Insurance is a home insurance carrier for properties in catastrophe-exposed regions, starting with wildfire in California and hurricanes in Florida. Instead of relying on zip-code level actuarial tables, the company builds a digital twin of each individual home and runs physics simulations , including computational fluid dynamics borrowed from aerospace engineering, to model how fire or wind would actually interact with a specific structure, its surroundings, and nearby vegetation . The launch marks a $70 million Series C led by Saga Ventures at a $1 billion valuation, with participation from Lowercarbon, Eclipse, Equal Ventures, Inspired Capital, Neotribe, and Jackson Square Ventures. The timing matters because incumbents have been pulling back from wildfire and hurricane markets while rates climb. Stand says it now insures more than $10 billion of property, up from $1 billion a year ago, and is growing roughly 15% a month across its two active states . The product sells through brokers and pairs underwriting with a resilience service that recommends concrete changes to a home, such as removing a specific tree, that can measurably lower the modeled risk and the premium. The company was founded by CEO Dan Preston, previously CEO of pay-per-mile auto insurer Metromile, alongside chief product officer Jason Mueller, who earlier led product at Policygenius, and chief science officer Matt DiStefano, whose background includes Boeing and SpaceX. The round also coincides with the hiring of former Nephila Capital executive Tony Landi as CFO to oversee the reinsurance capital stack as Stand scales further into catastrophe markets.
