Shadeform, the YC S23 GPU cloud marketplace founded by Ed Goode, Ronald Ding, and Zachary Warren, is giving owners of reserved and spare GPU nodes a way to rent idle hours to other teams on its marketplace. Flex VMs and Shadeform Spot, released during Shadeform Launch Week in October 2026, turn bare-metal nodes into capacity the owner can still reclaim. Shadeform frames the launch against a tighter market, with climbing hardware and rental prices, minimum contract terms that have tripled, and scarce near-term GPU supply, so paid-for clusters often sit unused between jobs. Flex VMs is the virtualization layer that makes that listing possible. It takes a bare-metal GPU node, regardless of data center or architecture, and runs it as a single-tenant virtual machine with full GPU passthrough and no overcommit. Enrollment is a short script that needs only a dedicated IPv4 address and SSH access. After review, a node can be live in about 30 minutes, instead of waiting on a full sales conversation. The provider keeps the node, can pull it back at any time, and can use Provider Priority to run their own workloads on their own hardware. Shadeform Spot uses that same path to resell idle time at a discount to on-demand rates. Owners list a spare node, earn while it would otherwise sit empty, and reclaim it instantly when they need it. Buyers get dedicated GPUs with advance notice before preemption, which fits checkpointed training, batch inference, rendering, and other work that can pause. Shadeform estimates that Spot revenue cuts the total contract value of owned infrastructure by 29% on average, and says its current Flex VM roster has achieved more than 95% utilization on Blackwell and Hopper GPUs.
