About the launch
Flock PHP is a local development environment for Laravel and PHP developers on macOS and Windows. The 1.0 beta, released by Lukas Frey, runs PHP, Node, databases, mail, and HTTPS as native processes, with no Docker and no virtual machine. Frey, a TALL stack developer and co-founder of Guava in Pilsen, made it free and open source, with no account to create and no paid tier, and described it as an open-source alternative with features similar to Laravel Herd. Park a folder, or link a single project, and Flock serves it at a.test domain, subdomains included, using a local certificate authority so HTTPS works without browser warnings. PHP 8.1 through 8.5 run side by side, and a project can pin its version in a.flockrc file. Sites can be served with PHP-FPM or FrankenPHP, including Laravel Octane worker mode. PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Valkey, Meilisearch, Typesense on macOS, and RustFS for S3-compatible storage install in one click as native processes that listen only on localhost. Mail stays in a local per-app inbox, dump() output is captured without code changes, Xdebug loads only while you are debugging, and the beta includes a built-in MCP server. The app lives in the menu bar on macOS 15 and later, Apple silicon only, as a SwiftUI app, and in the tray on Windows 10 and 11 as a WinUI 3 app, with the same CLI on both. Symfony, Statamic, Craft, plain PHP, and static sites are served alongside Laravel. This beta has no Linux build. The source is public on GitHub.
