Portable Computer is the on-device version of Perplexity's agent platform, Perplexity Computer, aimed at people who want an AI agent to plan and run multistep work without pushing sensitive files to the cloud. This launch brings it to Windows PCs equipped with NVIDIA GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs with 24GB or more of VRAM , extending an earlier rollout that began on NVIDIA DGX Spark systems and RTX PCs running Linux . For founders and operators who have been curious about local agents but did not want to assemble the stack themselves, it lowers the setup barrier considerably.
Under the hood, the app ships with a local model such as Qwen 3.8 27B that is post-trained to work with Perplexity Computer and optimized for NVIDIA RTX GPUs , so users do not have to pick weights or wire up inference tooling. The harness runs the agent loop on device, with connectors for Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack and GitHub so it can act across the tools people already use. When a task calls for more advanced reasoning, Portable Computer can identify that it needs cloud support and ask the user for permission before sending information off-device , which keeps the local-first default intact while leaving frontier models available on demand.
The launch matters now because agent workflows have been gated by cloud costs and privacy concerns, particularly for finance, legal, and engineering tasks that touch regulated or proprietary data. Locally completed work does not consume Perplexity Computer credits , which changes the economics for anyone running long or repeat jobs, and it gives Windows users on capable RTX hardware a practical way to test whether a private agent can replace parts of their existing SaaS workflow.

Local execution on RTX cards is the pitch I actually wanted. Cloud round trips for 'summarize this pdf' always felt insulting to my GPU.

The demo cuts are suspiciously clean. Is the agent actually clicking through those apps in real time or are we watching a very confident storyboard?

Tweet copy reads like a spec sheet. Nvidia partnership deserved a punchier hook than 'run the harness.'

Naive question but what happens on a laptop with an integrated GPU? Feels like half the target audience just got politely uninvited.

Finally something I can point legal at without a two week data residency review. Local files staying local is the whole product for regulated shops.

Distribution question nobody is asking: who installs this? Enterprise IT is not shipping an RTX harness to sales reps next quarter.

Every consumer AI product from 2024 is about to look like a horse and buggy. The 'do it on my machine, quietly' era is the actual unlock.

Curious how many engineers it took to get the Windows harness stable. If it's under fifteen I'm going to feel personally attacked.

Category is getting crowded fast. Third 'runs locally' launch this month and the differentiation is starting to blur into vibes and logos.

The launch video pacing is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Whoever cut it understood that 'local agent' needs to feel physical, not abstract.

Retention on local agent tools is the real unknown. People download, run three tasks, and go back to a browser tab within a week.

Been trying to ship something similar for months and Perplexity casually drops it on a Tuesday. Back to the drawing board I guess.
