About the launch
Pangram's new image and video detectors classify a picture or clip as AI-generated or real, for anyone who needs that answer on the page they are already viewing. The company is known for text detection, labeling writing as human, AI-assisted, or AI-generated. This launch extends that check to visual media, including a real photo with one synthetic region and video of a person speaking that was generated rather than filmed. The company reports that Pangram Image 1.0 identifies 99.2% of AI-generated images while flagging 0.27% of real ones, and that it can mark the part of a picture that looks synthetic. A faster model, Image Flash 1.0, reviews video frame by frame. On DF26, an academic benchmark of talking-head clips, Pangram reports a 98.7% score and says the study behind that set found people were barely better than chance at the same task. Both models are on Pangram's site, with native video upload, and available through its API. Image detection now also runs in the company's Chrome extension, which can flag AI images and video on a social feed, a shopping page, or a rental listing without a separate upload. Pangram Labs was founded in Brooklyn in 2023 by Max Spero, formerly at Google, and Bradley Emi, formerly at Tesla. The company first shipped as Checkfor.ai.
