About the launch
Soma reads patterns in your voice to show when your thinking tends to be clearest, what drains your energy, and when stress is building. It runs on Mac and iPhone, alongside the meetings, voice notes, and dictations you already make, so there is no new device to wear and no mood log to fill in. The company is opening a private beta, and the app is free while that beta runs. Jiali Zhang, an Oxford neuroscience PhD based in San Francisco, founded Soma (Soma Precision Health) to turn ordinary speech into a daily read on mental state. The product draws on published research linking changes in pace, pitch, vocabulary, and pauses to shifts in thinking, stress, mood, and fatigue. Soma is explicit that those studies support the method, that its own validation is still in progress, and that the app does not diagnose or screen for disease. On a Mac, recording starts when the microphone does, covering Zoom, Meet, Teams, FaceTime, voice notes, and dictation, and it stops when the mic does. Auto-record can be turned off. On iPhone, Soma records only when you press the button. It spends the first three days learning how you usually sound, then scores later speech as a shift from that baseline, using pitch, pacing, word choice, and how you respond to other speakers. Calendar, location, Apple Health, and wearable data can sit next to those scores. Audio is encrypted, and you choose which sessions to keep.
