Goldfish is a Mac app that drafts your next message the moment you press the Option key inside any text field, whether that field lives in Slack, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, X, Gmail, or a Claude prompt box. It works by keeping a running memory of what you have been reading, writing, and clicking across your apps, then using that context to predict a reply in your own tone without needing screenshots, screen recording, or manual copy-paste. Joel Edholm calls the approach "contextmaxxing," a tool that tracks everything you've been working on across every app, so pressing Option in any text field gives you an AI that already has the context loaded.
This launch opens up screen-aware one-click writing to everyone, positioning it as the next step past voice dictation for the many replies that are really just reactions to something you just saw. Typical uses shown in the launch include commenting on a post you are reading, sending cold outreach that adapts to the recipient's profile, briefing a teammate on what you just did (including in other languages like Swedish), and combining Goldfish with voice dictation by holding FN and Option together. It can also be prompted directly inside the text field for longer drafts like Slack updates with concrete use cases.
Goldfish is built by Joel Edholm and Kaspian Jakobsson , two Swedes building from San Francisco, who started Goldfish because they think AI should understand the context of your work without you having to copy-paste, explain, or repeat yourself. The app runs locally on macOS with a Windows build also available, and connects to Claude via a local MCP for users who want the same memory inside their existing chat workflow. It is still in beta and free for now, with the team reporting the Option shortcut has already been triggered more than 250,000 times in roughly two months.

Screen-aware writing is the wedge, but the moat is going to be whoever nails the undo flow when it guesses wrong. Watching this space closely.

Still evaluating whether autocomplete is a fad honestly. Get back to me when it can also open a new tab.

The launch video does the thing where the cursor moves before the narrator explains why. Feels rehearsed in a good way, not a keynote way.

First 10 seconds of the demo has zero setup, just Option press and go. That's the whole hook, don't let marketing bury it later.

ok wait, Option key as the universal summon is actually a power move. Every other tool wants a chord that requires yoga.

250k uses is a fine number but I'd want to know the ratio of accepted vs discarded suggestions before I get excited.

We shipped something adjacent at my last job in 2019 and nobody used it because the trigger was too heavy. Glad someone finally used a modifier key.

Tagline swap: 'Press Option. Skip the typing.' You're welcome, keep the equity.

Every screen-aware demo looks magical until it reads a Slack thread wrong and drafts a resignation letter to your CEO.

This is the fourth 'answer any message' launch in the category this month and easily the tightest positioning. The others buried the trigger in a menu.

Screen-aware means screenshot-scraping which means we're back to the productivity apps that eat your battery. Show me the idle CPU chart or I stay skeptical.

Love it. Ship a per-app tone profile next so my Discord replies stop sounding like board memos.

The market for 'help me reply faster' is smaller than everyone pretends. Most people who type slowly like typing slowly.

The retention story here is obvious once someone maps Option to muscle memory. That's a keyboard shortcut moat, which is the best kind.
