fal Recast is a one-click character replacement tool for video from fal, the generative media platform that serves image, video, and audio model APIs to developers. You give it a source clip and a reference photo of the new character, and it swaps the person on screen while keeping the original motion, camera moves, cut timing, and soundtrack intact. The tool is aimed at developers and creative teams who want to produce character variations of an existing shot without reshooting or rebuilding the edit.
Under the hood, Recast runs on H3 Max, fal's post-trained variant of MiniMax H3 . According to the model page, it replaces the main people in a source video using reference photos, tracks each person across shots, and accepts an optional prompt to control who becomes whom or which details to keep. It supports up to four reference photos and videos up to 30 seconds, with individual shots up to 15 seconds, at 768p or 1080p.
The launch matters because character swapping has typically required stitching together separate segmentation, tracking, and generation steps. Shipping it as a single endpoint on fal fits the company's broader positioning as an inference layer for generative media, built by co-founders Burkay Gur and Gorkem Yurtseven , and gives application builders a direct way to add character variation, localization, and ad personalization to pipelines that already run on fal.

The demo cuts are suspiciously clean. Show me a wedding video with 14 extras and a dog, then I'll believe the motion preservation claim.

Per-second video inference pricing had better not nuke margins the second someone recasts a 20 minute YouTube essay. Curious if there's a cap or you eat the GPU bill.

Been 3 weeks away from shipping a face-swap tool for 8 months. Guess I'll go touch grass now.

This is probably the final one-click tool shipped before an agent just does the whole shoot, cast included. Enjoy the UI while it still exists.

Already told two of my founders to rip out their custom pipelines and route to fal. The infra consolidation story here writes itself.

'Change any character in one click' is fine. 'Recast anyone. Keep everything.' is the tagline you actually wanted.

Before my team touches this: SOC2 Type II, SSO via Okta, and where does the uploaded footage live after processing? Asking for the 400 lawyers upstream of me.

Consent and likeness rights on the reference photo input, how is that being enforced? 'Upload any face' is a deposition waiting to happen.

The demo video's typography is doing a lot of fighting with the generated frames. Smaller caption, more negative space, let the swap breathe.

Thumbnail is two faces staring at each other with no caption context. I had to read the tweet twice to figure out which one was the 'before'.

Everyone keeps saying video gen is exploding. Meanwhile the actual market for 'swap my cousin into this TikTok' is like 11 people and a legal team.

Reminds me of what Captions and Tavus pitched early, except shipped as an API primitive instead of a consumer skin. That's the better wedge.

My ex is going to be in every Christopher Nolan film by Friday.
