About the launch
Butterfly's Pond is a Linux operating system for people who want to install a designed desktop and try it, and the early preview is now public. Installers and a closer look at the system are on butterfly.so/pond, opening a build that earlier this month was only being shared with testers. Pond is a rolling Arch desktop that uses Niri, a scrollable tiling Wayland compositor, and ships Butterfly's own shell, lock screen, boot splash, and installer. The ISO is 1.3 GiB, needs at least 1 GiB of RAM, and usually installs in under a minute depending on the connection. A unified package manager sets per-app defaults across pacman, Nix, and Flatpak. The system uses Btrfs with Snapper snapshots, and GPU support includes Mesa plus automatic NVIDIA driver matching. A component called Pond Gramercy is proprietary and is not in the public installer repository. Butterfly Interaction Inc. is the company behind the project. Taha Hossain, a cofounder based in Toronto, started Butterfly after running Daybreak Studio, a design and technology studio. The release is still marked early preview, so this launch is a public test of the installer and the desktop rather than a finished operating system.
