Wajo is a San Francisco startup building Fo, a consumer AI operator that handles real-world errands like booking a haircut, chasing a plumber, renewing a passport, or ordering lunch for a team. Today's launch upgrades Fo's voice stack so it works both directions on the phone. Fo now has its own phone number that users can call to go hands free, and it also places outbound calls on their behalf, sitting through hold music and phone menus before reporting back with an answer . The demo also shows Fo taking instructions in Hindi and Hinglish and switching languages mid-conversation, extending the product beyond English-only voice assistants. This launch matters because most consumer agents still live inside a chat window. Wajo is pushing Fo toward the channels people actually use for logistics (phone calls, email, and group chats) and pairing that with the ability to transact, since Fo carries its own credit card to reserve, renew, and pay without users handing over card details . Making the agent reachable by direct dial, in a caller's native language, is a meaningful step toward using it from a car, a kitchen, or anywhere typing is inconvenient. Wajo is led by founder Shivani Poddar, who began her career at CMU researching natural language generation, built one of the first social conversation agents at the Alexa Prize, spearheaded multimodal AI at Meta, and spent the last few years launching frontier models at Google DeepMind and Google Labs. The product is currently in invite-only alpha, and this update is aimed at founders, operators, and busy households who want an agent that can pick up the phone as fluently as it drafts an email.

The 'you call it, it calls you' framing is cute but I need to see the onboarding. If I have to configure a SIP trunk before making a lunch reservation I'm out.

Watched the demo twice trying to figure out if the phone call audio was live or spliced in post. Founders, please stop cutting away right when the agent starts talking.

ok wait, an agent with its own phone number is actually a killer distribution hack. You skip the app store entirely and just live in my recents.

Building in the same space and genuinely happy to see more voice-first agents. The inbound number angle is smart, we went pure outbound and regret it slightly.

Voice agents are fun demos. Curious what percent of these calls actually complete the task versus punt back to a human, because that's the whole retention story.

The best interface is the one your grandmother already knows how to use. A phone number is that.

Any docs for developers or is this purely consumer? Would love to know if the native language support extends to Darija before I get excited.

How big is the team behind this? Multilingual voice plus outbound calling plus inbound number feels like a lot of surface area for a small crew.

The market for 'call this thing to book stuff' has been tried by every YC batch since 2017. Convince me this cycle is different.

The tweet has a cut-off link right in the middle of the value prop. Nothing says BREAKING like a broken URL.

Imagine paying per call in a stablecoin and letting the agent negotiate with other agents onchain. Nobody asked but I'm saying it anyway.

Latency on multilingual voice with tool use is the real boss fight here. Would love a blog post on the stack instead of another sizzle reel.
