OpenEdit is an open-source video editing pipeline that plugs into coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini, letting them transcribe footage, design captions, build motion graphics, and render finished videos from a single prompt. It has been tested with Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini. The skill prepares the runtime and loads its AGENTS.md explicitly , and installs with a one-line command (npx skills add veedstudio/open-edit). The target user is anyone already living inside an AI coding agent who wants to turn raw clips into subtitled, on-brand social video without leaving the terminal.
The launch matters because it opens up VEED's editing stack to developers and agent builders rather than keeping it behind the company's SaaS product. The OpenEdit editor is under Apache-2.0, while the renderer binaries are closed source under PolyForm Shield 1.0.0, and you can sell what you make with them at no cost to VEED. With the Fabric integration, OpenEdit can also generate footage, images, music, and sound effects when a job needs them , and the announcement video itself was produced entirely inside the tool.
VEED was founded on 20 March 2018 by Sabba Keynejad and Tim Mamedov, a designer and an engineer who believed that making a great video shouldn't require a production crew, a six-figure budget, or three days of your life . OpenEdit extends that thesis to the agent era, giving Claude and its peers a native way to compose and ship video.

Open-source editor for Claude is a spicy framing. Does the repo actually work standalone or do I need an Anthropic key to breathe?

Genuinely want to know how many people touched this repo before launch. If it's under five that's a masterclass in scope discipline.

That first 1.2 seconds of the demo video is doing heavy lifting. Whoever cut the reveal to land right on the beat drop, give them a raise.

Curious what the retention curve on the demo video looks like past the 6 second mark, the pacing gets loose right when the captions stop moving.

Wait so the launch video was made in the thing you're launching. Very Inception, slightly suspicious, mostly respect.

Cool cool cool but is the motion graphics engine deterministic across runs or does prompt drift ruin every second export?

Open source + creator tooling is basically begging for a $OPEN airdrop to early committers. Just saying, the primitives are there.

Would love to chat about how the OpenEdit spec came together, any chance the team is doing background conversations this week?

"Blink of AI" is the kind of pun I will forgive exactly once and only because the captions were readable.

Shipping an OSS repo alongside the hosted product is the correct move but only if the install docs don't require a PhD. Fingers crossed on the README.

Every editor launched in 2026 will just be an agent that watches your timeline and edits while you sleep. OpenEdit is one abstraction away from that already.

The "one prompt" claim is doing Olympic gymnastics here. Show me the raw prompt, the retries, and the manual cleanup or I'm assuming Potemkin timeline.
