Tolan is a voice-first companion app for people who want someone to talk with about ordinary life, and this launch is a public introduction of Orb, a newer character, staged as a joke about AI labs racing to ship more capable models. Users match with an animated character, chat by text or out loud, and the character remembers names, plans, and small facts so it can help with dinner, a rough day, or a goal they are trying to keep. Founder and CEO Quinten Farmer has aimed the product at people outside a typical tech audience. The company has told reporters that about 70 percent of users are women and about 40 percent are parents. In the launch video, Orb is rounder and smoother, spins, and has two arms, which the presenters say tested better than one or three.
