Restate is a runtime for building backends and AI agents that recover from failures without the engineering overhead usually required to get there. It uses durable execution, recording completed work and state so an application can resume from the right point after a crash or interruption, and extends that property to the communication and state shared across a distributed system. The company was founded by members of the team that created Apache Flink, the open-source framework that helped make real-time stream processing a core part of modern data infrastructure. The co-founders are Stephan Ewen, Till Rohrmann, and Igal Shilman , working across Berlin and San Francisco. This launch marks a $20M Series A led by Singular with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures , raised to push durable execution from a niche workflow tool into a default building block for backends. At the center of Restate's architecture is a purpose-built distributed log paired with an event-driven orchestrator. Rather than placing durable execution on top of a general-purpose database, the log becomes the foundation for execution, state and communication. Restate says this creates a self-contained system that does not require an external database or search service while remaining lightweight enough to use across an application. Developers get primitives like Durable Functions, Virtual Objects, Virtual Queues, and durable RPC that cover async work, queued jobs, and multi-service calls. The timing points squarely at agents. As LLM-driven systems take on longer tasks that span tool calls, external APIs, and human handoffs, the cost of a lost step grows, and retries alone stop being enough. Restate's longer-term aim is to build the runtime underneath agents, workflows, and distributed applications that makes durability, state, communication, and coordination feel like normal programming primitives , which is the thesis this round is funding.

Durable execution is a real pain point, but curious what the retention story looks like once teams realize they could DIY it with Temporal patterns. Interesting space though.

No pricing page link in the launch thread is a choice. Enterprise-only energy or just hiding the SKU grid?

The tweet copy buries the lede. 'We raised' should not come after a three paragraph origin story when the TL is scrolling at 400mph.

So this is like... a message queue with memory? Call me when it has a WordPress plugin.

Landing page is clean but the hero gradient fights the logo mark. Also 'innately resilient' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that tagline.

Every agent framework promises resilience until the LLM hallucinates a tool call into a billing endpoint. Would love to see the chaos test footage, not the happy path.

A system that remembers what it was doing when it crashed. Rare and precious, like a dev who writes migrations before Friday deploys.

Been chasing exactly-once semantics across three microservices this week and I may or may not have cried. Bookmarking.

Three years of heads-down work before the Series A tweet. That's the actual flex here, not the round.

First 10 seconds of your landing hero needs a code snippet, not a diagram. Devs want to see the API shape before they'll scroll.

Hey Stephan, happy to chat on background about the round. Few questions on the agent angle vs the original durable workflows pitch.

Agents without durable state are just expensive loops. This framing actually makes sense.

I'm 3 weeks out from launching something that would've benefited from this a year ago. Timing is a cruel mistress.

Building adjacent tooling for agent memory and genuinely rooting for you all. The durable execution tide lifts a lot of boats.
