PlayGeni Storymaker is a screen-free audio toy for children ages 3 to 8. A child places physical blocks for characters, places, and objects on the device and presses play to hear a new story built from that mix. The toy has no screen, microphone, or camera. Parents use a companion app to set age, interests, vocabulary, story length, and language, with stories available in 10 languages. Preorders are open at a list price of $89.99, and the company says units ship in mid-November. Blocks come in themed books made with children's authors, and blocks from different books can be combined. Kids can also draw their own characters and places on blank blocks. A parent scans the drawing, and that drawing can appear in later stories. Players such as Yoto and Toniebox replay a fixed recording from a card or figure. Storymaker generates a different audio story from the same blocks, saves it on the device, and can replay it with no connection, including in a car or on a plane. The launch film also shows stories that wind down at bedtime. The product grew out of MIT's Design Intelligence Lab, which studies physical materials children can arrange and remix as a way into generative tools. Cofounder and CEO Kevin Tang has a background in industrial design and a master's in creative technology from Harvard, and came through MITdesignX. Cofounder Marcelo Coelho directs the lab and previously led design at Formlabs. Tang said the company has raised $2 million to build it.
