OpenDots is a self-hostable, open-source alternative to OpenAI's recently announced Dots, aimed at developers and teams who want always-on AI coworkers they can run on their own infrastructure. Each agent gets its own cloud computer and browser, connects to apps through plugins, and can keep working toward a goal in the background, reachable from ChatGPT on desktop, web, and mobile, or from Slack and Teams . The launch lands directly in response to OpenAI's Dots announcement at DevDay, giving builders a way to get the same shape of product without being locked into a single vendor or model.
The template ships with computer use across browser, terminal, and files, Spaces and Pages for organizing project work, voice calls, and web and mobile clients. It is built on CopilotKit and AG-UI, so teams can clone the repo, swap in any agent harness, and customize the stack . Related templates in the same family include OpenMuse, OpenBot, and OpenTag, each a UX variation on the same underlying agent primitives .
The launch comes from Atai Barkai, founder and CEO of CopilotKit, which positions itself as the frontend stack for AI agents , with the accompanying writeup credited to Anmol Baranwal and Eli Berman. For operators evaluating the agent category, OpenDots is useful as a reference implementation of what a production always-on agent product looks like end to end, from the compute sandbox down to the messaging and voice surfaces.

the unicode font in the tweet is doing more heavy lifting than most seed rounds this quarter. respect to whoever opened the character map at 2am.

self-hostable AI coworkers that live in Slack is the exact pitch I've heard four times this month, so the real race is now docs and harness compatibility. who's shipping the better quickstart.

the launch thread buries the repo link under five bullet points, which is a sin when the repo is the entire point. lead with the github next time.

ok wait, voice calls AND computer use AND spaces AND pages in a v1? either the team is cracked or the readme is doing a lot of imagination work.

before I tweet interesting, what's the actual retention story on an always-on agent after week two when it's quietly burning tokens in a tmux pane nobody opens.

retention on these things is honestly a vibes question until someone defines what an agent being 'used' even means. DAU of a background daemon is a philosophical nightmare.

every tool that works with ANY agent harness ends up being a harness. this is the circle of life in agent land.

domain is dots.com, product is OpenDots, tweet is from an account I've never seen before. the branding chain of custody is doing somersaults here.

cool, now tell me about SSO, audit logs, and whether procurement can self-host this behind our VPC without a six-week security review.
