Microsoft Copilot is the company's AI assistant for work, and this launch is its largest overhaul to date. Announced by CEO Satya Nadella on September 25, 2026, the update reframes Copilot as "a new OS for work that spans every model, every form factor, and every task," pushing deeper AI integration across Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook. The pitch is aimed at enterprises and knowledge workers already sitting inside Microsoft 365 who want a single surface for chat, collaboration, app-building and background automation. The rebuilt Copilot introduces three new capabilities, Home, Code and Autopilot, alongside a shift that moves long-running agent work onto usage-based billing. Home is a starting point where Chat and Cowork come together, and with Office in Copilot the full power of Word, Excel and PowerPoint is pulled inside the app. Code adds a fourth unit of knowledge work alongside the document, spreadsheet and deck, in the form of small, purpose-built solutions anyone can create to get a job done , with users describing an app, dashboard, tracker or workflow in natural language and having it built for them. Autopilot is the piece pointed most directly at enterprise buyers. Unlike a traditional chatbot that waits for prompts, it can continue working in the background, monitoring channels, following up on conversations and handling recurring tasks. The launch matters now because it consolidates what had been a sprawl of separate Copilot surfaces into one app and puts Microsoft's answer to autonomous agents in front of the same customer base that already pays for Microsoft 365, at a moment when every major AI vendor is racing to define what a long-running work agent should look like.

Calling it an OS for work is a bold rebrand for what used to be a sidebar in Excel. Curious if Autopilot actually initiates or just waits to be poked like the rest of them.

Satya's tweet reads like four separate launches stapled together with a bullet list. Would have hit harder as a thread with one demo per beat.

Every model, every form factor, every task. Also every SKU, every rename, every confused IT admin trying to explain the difference to their CFO.

As someone who actually pushes procurement through Redmond, the enterprise Autopilot pitch is the only line here I care about. Give me tenant isolation details or give me nothing.

Docs situation for Copilot agents is genuinely a maze right now. Four products landing at once means four sets of getting-started pages that will contradict each other by Friday.

First 10 seconds of the launch video is a montage of laptops opening. You had the biggest stage in software and led with b-roll.

Every demo in the reveal was cut right before the model finished thinking. Staff engineer brain says pre-recorded with the loading spinners edited out.

The kerning on the Autopilot wordmark is doing something weird and I cannot unsee it. Also why is every AI product in 2024 shipping with the same gradient blob.

Long-running agent for the enterprise is the phrase every vendor deployed this quarter. At some point one of you has to define long.

Portfolio company of mine tried to build proactive agents last year and hit the reliability wall hard. Very interested to see whether Microsoft's answer is real infra or just a very confident retry loop.

Nothing in this announcement tells me where the agent's memory lives or which region processes it. That's the first question my team will ask on Monday morning.

Just got Cortana working on my Windows Phone, will circle back on this Copilot thing in 2026.
