Mercury Books is double-entry accounting software built directly into Mercury's banking platform, using AI to categorize and reconcile banking, card, invoicing, and bill pay activity the moment it happens so founders get a real-time view of their business without imports, exports, or manual entry. The pitch is aimed at founders who work with a bookkeeper (or handle books themselves) and are tired of waiting weeks after month-end to see where money actually went. The product supports full double-entry accounting with accrual and cash basis reporting built to the standard a bookkeeper or accountant expects , which positions it as a replacement for standalone tools rather than a lightweight summary layer on top of a bank feed. It also plugs into Command, Mercury's built-in AI agent, so customers can ask questions about their finances or take actions like recategorizing transactions in bulk, writing journal entries, or updating their chart of accounts in natural language. This launch matters because Mercury, led by co-founder and CEO Immad Akhund, is extending from business banking into the finance ops stack that startups typically stitch together from separate vendors. With more than 300,000 customers already on the banking side , Books is a direct challenge to incumbent small-business accounting software, betting that owning the transaction data at the source produces cleaner books than any tool importing it after the fact.

So Mercury is now competing with QuickBooks? Bold Tuesday energy from Immad.

Good bookkeeping software dies the moment tax season exposes the edge cases. Ask me again in April.

'The moment they happen' is doing a lot of load-bearing work in that sentence. What's the actual latency on categorization, seconds or minutes?

How does the model handle Stripe payout aggregation? That's where every 'AI accounting' demo I've seen quietly falls apart.

The launch video pacing is genuinely tight, no bloated founder monologue, no fake customer testimonial montage. Rare restraint.

Every bank eventually tries to become the whole finance stack. Curious if bookkeepers see this as a partner or a threat.

AI categorizes my Uber Eats as 'client entertainment' and suddenly I'm a startup again.

Is there an API for pulling categorized transactions out, or is this a roach motel where data checks in but doesn't check out?

Accounting is the last unbundled workflow at Mercury. Aggressive scope creep and I mean that as a compliment.

The thumbnail is way too clean. Someone on that design team deserves a raise or a nap.

Onboarding better be one click for existing Mercury customers or this whole pitch collapses. Consumer instinct says test it Friday.

One more thing for the roadmap: multi-entity consolidation. Every founder with a HoldCo is begging for it silently.

Would love to hear more about the training data here. Are we talking labeled transactions from Mercury's own customer base, or something else?

The market for SMB accounting is not shrinking but it is brutally sticky. Getting people to leave their existing bookkeeper is the real product.

Waiting for the inevitable 'MERC token for reconciled invoices' announcement. You know it's coming eventually.
