Persimmon is a large-scale "user model" from humans& that simulates how people behave in multi-turn, multi-user chat settings, aiming to capture the distribution of human behavior within one person's responses as well as across people, situations, and time. The intended audience is researchers and product teams who need realistic stand-ins for real users when building evaluations, training environments, or agent workflows, since the outputs of frontier models vary much less than those of real people, representing only a sliver of the wider human distribution. The launch matters now because humans& is releasing it as a research preview alongside a set of evaluations designed to measure how faithfully user models capture human behavior , with limited access available through a playground and API by application . To measure fidelity, the team adapts Turing's original setup to a Multi-User Turing Test, where an observer must distinguish an all-human group conversation from an AI simulating a group of people , with 50 percent representing human parity. On this benchmark humans& reports that Persimmon achieves scores ranging from 18.6% to 21.1% across three datasets, substantially above every comparison model on all three datasets , with comparisons that include frontier systems and dedicated simulation baselines. humans& is a new lab whose founders include Andi Peng, a former Anthropic researcher who worked on reinforcement learning and post-training of Claude 3.5 through 4.5, Georges Harik, Google's seventh employee, who helped build its first advertising systems, Eric Zelikman and Yuchen He, two former xAI researchers who helped develop the Grok chatbot, and Noah Goodman, a Stanford professor of psychology and computer science . Persimmon is the group's first public research artifact and signals where the team is placing its bet, which is that modeling users faithfully is a prerequisite for AI systems that work alongside people rather than in isolation from them.

Persimmon is a great name until you realize half the internet is going to spell it Persimmon, Persimon, Persimmion. Domain squatters, assemble.

The launch video's voiceover was doing a lot of heavy lifting and the b-roll was doing none. More product, less soft piano please.

ok wait, if it simulates how people talk, does it also simulate how people ghost you for three weeks then reply lol sorry buried?

Genuine question from someone new to this space: what's the eval set for realistic? Like who decided that a Persimmon convo passes as human.

Curious what corpus you trained on for interaction dynamics. Prior work on dialogue realism tends to collapse on turn-taking and backchanneling, would love a technical writeup.

For AI to work with us it needs to understand us. My therapist has been trying for six years, wish you luck.

Fifth foundational model launch I've seen this month positioned as the one that finally gets humans. At this point humans are the most benchmarked object on earth.

hot take: this is the last foundation model launch that gets to skip shipping an agent on day one. the bar just moved and you're standing under it.

Building something adjacent in social simulation and honestly relieved someone else is validating the category. Also mildly annoyed. Both can be true.

How many people shipped this? I need to know if I should feel bad about my two person team or worse.

The kerning on the wordmark is off and the ampersand is fighting the lowercase h. I will not be taking questions.

The thumbnail is genuinely one of the better ones this week, the color grade actually holds up in the timeline preview. Small win but noticed.

That first cut from the founder talking head into the product demo happens like 14 seconds too late. You lose half the scroll audience there.

Cool, but does it do anything a well-prompted chatbot from 2019 couldn't fake in a Discord channel? Asking sincerely.

Every simulate real humans demo I've clicked ends with the model saying certainly! I'd be happy to. Prove me wrong.
