Free Reader is a macOS app for reading books and documents alongside an AI assistant in a single window. It works as an open-source native reading workspace for PDF, EPUB, and TXT with highlights, notes, inline rewriting, book chat, browser panes, and local-first storage. The pitch in the launch tweet frames it as a from-scratch take on Kindle with AI woven throughout, aimed at people who want a quiet place to read long-form material without switching between a reader, a chat window, and a browser. The app is built by Dada (@marvy_101), a San Francisco based founder who is also building Sorce (YC F25) and previously worked at Tesla and Dell. The first public macOS alpha ships as a universal build for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, with Google and email account creation, cloud library, notes, and highlights sync, and PDF, EPUB, and text reading. Under the hood, the reading surface uses SwiftUI, PDFKit, and a hardened WKWebView for reflowable formats, and the library, progress, highlights, and saved conversations live in local SQLite so the core reading loop keeps working without a backend. What distinguishes this launch is the scope of the AI integration in a single-developer indie tool. The assistant can be scoped to a highlighted passage, the current page, everything up to the reader's position, or the entire book, and a rewrite action can restate difficult writing in plainer language without leaving the page. Optional Supabase and Vercel sync is available for anyone who wants to run their own cloud, and the source is published under an MIT license on GitHub. Distribution is direct download with no subscription, which positions Free Reader as an alternative for readers who want AI features without handing their library to a hosted service.

the app icon has 4px too much padding on the right and i will die on this hill. otherwise the type stack looks lovely.

no subscription, all local, native swift. this is the trifecta that makes me trust an indie mac app immediately.

"one simple, clean place to read without any distraction" is three redundancies in a trench coat. try: "read. nothing else."

the tweet works because you resisted the urge to make a 12-part thread. one screenshot, one link, done. more of this please.

building something similar for longform web articles and honestly the "AI everywhere" framing is a gutsy pitch when readers usually want less noise. curious how you draw the line.

imagine a $READ token that rewards you for finishing chapters. no i will not elaborate.

"a mac app i made for myself" is the six most VC-bait words in the english language and i mean that as a compliment.
