Form Studio 1 is a professional resin 3D printer from Formlabs that starts at $699, bringing the company's stereolithography hardware into price territory previously dominated by hobbyist machines. The printer costs roughly a quarter of the $2,625 Form 4, and Formlabs is pitching it at people printing miniatures, scale models and props at home , a notable shift for a company whose customers have historically been dental labs, engineering teams, and manufacturing shops. Formlabs has nearly 200,000 printers in service, mostly priced at $2,500 or more , which makes a sub-$700 professional-grade machine a meaningful expansion of its addressable market. The hardware is built around a new print engine using a custom lens array and 28 LEDs with 35 micron pixels, and Formlabs says most jobs finish in under two hours. The bigger story may be safety and placement: the Form Studio 1 ships on November 16 and carries UL GREENGUARD Gold certification when paired with Alpha Resins and the VOC Extractor , meaning it is cleared for use in offices, classrooms, and homes without a dedicated ventilation setup. Six new Alpha Resins start at $29 per liter and are rated for long-term skin contact under ISO 10993, and an optional Resin Tank Pro supports third-party materials for users who want to stay outside the Formlabs ecosystem. Formlabs was founded in 2011 by Max Lobovsky, David Cranor, and Natan Linder, MIT graduates who set out to build a lower-cost professional stereolithography solution , and the company is still led by Lobovsky as CEO out of Somerville, Massachusetts. The launch lands alongside a companion Form Studio Wash+Cure post-processing unit, a PreForm mobile app, and the broader opening of Formlabs' on-demand parts service, signaling a push to make the full workflow accessible to a wider base of creators, product designers, and small studios rather than just enterprise buyers.

$699 and 'the world's safest' in the same breath is a flex, but I want to see the resin fume numbers next to that claim before I put one on my kitchen table.

Finally a Formlabs machine priced like it wants to live in a classroom. The real question is whether the resin bottle markup eats the printer savings in 6 months.

Curious what the quote-to-order conversion looks like at $699 versus the previous SKUs. My guess is the funnel shape changes completely and support tickets go up 4x in week one.

The product shot pacing in that video is immaculate but the voiceover sounds like it's selling a mid-tier SUV. More print, less dealership.

Tweet dropped at a weirdly quiet hour for hardware. Was this timed to catch the EU morning crowd or did someone fat-finger the schedule?

'High performance 3D printers, finally within reach' is fine. 'The resin printer that stopped being a hobby project' would've printed harder.

Open is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that bullet list. Open resin, open slicer, or open 'you can hold it with two hands'?

I've been 3 weeks away from launching my dental model side-hustle for about 14 months. This might be the push, assuming the biocompatible resin isn't locked behind the Pro tier.

Love it, now ship a build plate auto-eject and a resin level sensor and you've killed the entire mid-market. Add it to the roadmap, I'll wait.

Been shipping tabletop minis on an older Form for 2 years. If this one actually hits 2 hour prints without the usual peel failures, I'm genuinely nervous as a competitor and a customer.

Dumb question: what happens to the resin tray when it's full and I need to pause a print overnight? The video kind of glosses over the messy part.

Any REST endpoints for queueing prints from a CI pipeline, or is it still PreForm-and-pray? Asking because every farm I know is duct-taping this part.

The $699 anchor is going to make every competitor's $1,200 printer feel insulting by Friday. Smart positioning, the market needed this pressure.

'Finally within reach' is wild coming from the brand whose last printer cost like a used Civic. Welcome to the price bracket, we have snacks.
