Base Labs is a research organization spun out of AI infrastructure company Baseten, focused on post-training and training science for open-weight language models. Its stated agenda covers continual learning, the science of reinforcement learning, model memory in the KV cache, specialization, reasoning, and serving, with early work already published on topics like neural KV cache compaction, on-policy versus dense training, and whether language models can learn facts continually in their weights. The audience is researchers, engineers, and open-source model builders who want a counterweight to closed frontier labs.
The lab operates on four public commitments: publishing without exception, including negative results, in plain English, encouraging skepticism as part of the scientific method, starting from concrete falsifiable problems, and refusing to sell a silver bullet before rigorous evaluation. Alongside the research group, Base Labs runs the BaseHub Data Foundry, a dedicated effort to produce high-quality RL environments for the open-source community, and a three-month residency in San Francisco called the Fellowship, which pairs researchers with a senior mentor and full compute access to produce one publishable result. Compensation is listed at $15,000 per month plus a compute budget, with cohorts of three fellows.
This launch matters because it formalizes something the open ecosystem has been missing, a research group with production-grade compute and inference infrastructure sitting directly behind it. Baseten already serves open models at scale for enterprise customers, and Base Labs uses that position to run large experiments and release the recipes rather than keep them internal. For founders and operators watching the open versus closed model debate, it is a concrete bet that a healthy frontier depends on shared science, shared data pipelines, and shared training methodology.

A serving company starting a research lab is either genius vertical integration or a very expensive way to justify a keynote. Rooting for the former.

Continual learning is the graveyard of ambitious research agendas. If you actually crack even 10% of it, please write the boring paper and not the flashy one.

The launch page loads in like a blink and the typography actually breathes. Someone on that team cares, and I respect it.

Tweet ends on a bullet with a trailing link and no closing thought. You had me at continual learning and then you just walked away from the podium.

Quick rewrite on the house: 'Open intelligence, built in the open.' You can venmo me.

'Democratize open-source intelligence' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in one sentence. What does democratize mean when the GPUs still cost what they cost?

Naive question from the cheap seats: is Base Labs releasing weights, or releasing papers about weights? Those are very different flavors of open.

Will docs land at the same time as the first release, or are we doing the classic 'repo drops, README follows next quarter' speedrun?

Every inference company eventually starts a research lab. It's the tech equivalent of buying a motorcycle at 40.

Building in an adjacent research space and honestly relieved someone with actual infra is doing this. We'll happily cite you if you cite us back.

Have a phenomenal RL researcher wrapping up a postdoc, open to industry labs with actual compute. DM if the hiring page isn't live yet.

Any chance of a quick chat about what 'blue-sky' means here in practice? Trying to figure out if this is a real lab or a very well-designed hiring funnel.

Suggestion for the roadmap: publish negative results too. The RL science community would owe you dinner for a year.

The health of an ecosystem is measured by how many second-place projects survive. Curious how Base Labs plans to feed that middle.

Announcement tweet with no video, no diagram, no vibes reel. In 2024 that's either confidence or a missed opportunity, and I can't tell which yet.
