jevgrep is a command line tool (invoked as jg) that lets coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode find relevant files and source context by asking what the code does in plain English, rather than relying on keyword grep or a prebuilt embedding index. It is powered by Jev, TypeSafe AI's System One model, which scores each code chunk in a single non-autoregressive pass and returns ranked grep-style file:line hits with calibrated confidence . The pitch for this launch is cost: the author reports a 40 percent reduction in coding agent spend on SWE-bench, achieved by offloading repository exploration from a general purpose LLM to a cheaper, faster decision model.
The tool is built by David Zhang (@dzhng), co-founder and CEO of Duet (formerly Aomni) , and ships with an installer step (jg skill) that drops an agent skill into whichever coding agent is detected locally so the agent knows when to call jg for context collection instead of reading files into its own window. It runs on Node 22+ and reaches Jev either directly through TypeSafe or via OpenRouter and the Vercel AI Gateway.
The underlying model comes from TypeSafe AI, a San Francisco company that exited stealth with $40 million in seed funding led by DCVC and a model designed to put AI directly inside software applications. Its first model, Jev, differs from conventional large language models by producing structured decisions rather than conversational text . TypeSafe was founded in 2024 by CEO Diogo Almeida, who previously worked on RLHF, InstructGPT, ChatGPT and GPT-4 at OpenAI, with co-founders Erik Gafni and Sasha Sheng . jevgrep is one of the first developer tools to show what that model enables when wired into the agentic coding loop that most engineering teams are now standardizing on.

40% cost reduction on SWE-bench is a spicy claim to open with. The real question is whether my Claude bill actually notices or if it's lost in the noise of me rerunning the same prompt 14 times.

ok wait, naming the CLI 'jevgrep' is either genius or an act of aggression toward anyone who has to type it at 2am. I respect it either way.

Love the tech, but 'make sure to use the built in skill' is doing a LOT of load-bearing work in that tweet. How are you actually getting devs to install the skill vs just pip installing and vibing?

Cool CLI. Before I can get this past my security team, is jev running locally or phoning home, and do you have anything resembling a SOC2 roadmap?

The demo gif pacing is actually great, you can read every frame without pausing. Rare W for a terminal recording.

Building something adjacent in the agent-tooling space and honestly the 'skill' primitive is the right abstraction. Mildly annoyed you shipped it before I did.

Context collection as a product category is going to collapse into the model provider within 6 months. Enjoy the window.

This slots nicely next to what a couple folks in my portfolio are doing on the agent-runtime side. Would love to see jev benchmarked against a longer-horizon task, not just SWE-bench.

hot take: the real moat here isn't the 40%, it's that you benchmarked at all. Half the agent CLIs on my machine have never seen a benchmark in their life.

I'm 3 weeks from launching something that uses jevgrep under the hood. Please do not change the API, I am begging on behalf of all weekend builders.

Rewrite suggestion for the tagline: 'intelligence beyond chat' is vibey but vague. Try 'the AI lab that got tired of chatboxes' and bill me later.

A grep that thinks. We have come full circle from awk and I am delighted.

Installed it in two minutes which is already better than 90% of CLIs I try. The skill install step needs one less copy-paste though, my muscle memory wanted a single command.
