Ground network connecting Earth and space to speed up missions
What Northwood launched

Today, Northwood is announcing a $375M Series C. In February of 2024, less than three years ago, we announced Northwood as a small six-person team. We’ve grown a lot, but the goal stays the same – solve connectivity between Earth and space to take missions further faster. The https://t.co/vfPoEDqoyp

About the launch
Northwood runs a shared ground network that connects satellites to Earth for commercial operators, U. S. government agencies, and allied missions. Operators book passes on that network across low Earth orbit, medium Earth orbit, and geostationary orbit. They do not need to build dedicated stations. The company has closed a $375 million Series C, co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and DFJ Growth, to finish work already under contract, hire, and add sites. The round comes as active satellites have grown from about 3,000 in 2020 to more than 14,000 by the end of 2025. Northwood designs and builds its own antennas in Torrance, California. Portal phased arrays handle command and control and can link multiple satellites at once. Prism dishes carry high-throughput payload data. Less than nine months after a $100 million Series B, the company has deployed six multi-orbit sites on two continents, completed a live full-duplex command link to a government geostationary satellite from a Portal site in a U. S. Space Force prototype, and opened a 185,000 square foot headquarters and factory. A new site takes about three months, and antennas can go from delivery to live links in three to four hours. The team is above 140 people and plans to add 400 jobs in Torrance and Washington, D. C. over three years. Bridgit Mendler, Griffin Cleverly, and Shaurya Luthra founded Northwood, with Mendler as chief executive. The company announced itself in February 2024 as a six-person team. Follow-on investors include Washington Harbour Partners, which led the Series B, along with Alpine Space Ventures, Stepstone, and In-Q-Tel. HSBC Innovation Banking is also providing a multi-year credit facility of undisclosed size. The company said the round values Northwood at $2 billion.
