Hermeus is introducing Ramjet-X, a low-cost, expendable ramjet-powered vehicle designed for launch from its Quarterhorse aircraft . The intended users are defense programs and hardware teams that need sustained high-Mach flight time but cannot justify a bespoke test campaign for every experiment. Customers and partners will be able to integrate payloads, sensors, communications and compute systems, autonomy, material samples, propulsion technologies, and other experimental hardware and software onto Ramjet-X for testing in representative sustained high-Mach conditions. By providing a repeatable platform, launch architecture, and flight-test infrastructure, Hermeus can allow customers to focus on the technology being evaluated rather than developing a bespoke high-speed flight vehicle and test program for every experiment. The launch matters because it changes the economics of a testing regime that has stalled US high-speed programs for decades. Ramjets require significant initial speed before they can operate effectively. Instead of relying on a large, expensive, expendable booster for every test, Hermeus will use its reusable Quarterhorse aircraft to carry Ramjet-X to the speed and altitude required for launch. That air-launch approach turns each Quarterhorse sortie into a reusable first stage, and per imagery released with the announcement, a Quarterhorse can carry a Ramjet-X mounted on a pylon under each wing, indicating that two different high-speed tests can be carried out in a single sortie . Hermeus was founded in 2018 by AJ Piplica, Zach Shore, Skyler Shuford, Glenn Case, and Mike Smayda , with Shore now serving as CEO and authoring the launch announcement. Development is already progressing on multiple fronts, with Hermeus testing Ramjet-X's ramjet engine at its HEAT facility in Jacksonville, Florida, while high-temperature structures are in development at its headquarters in El Segundo, California. Integrated vehicle testing is currently planned for 2027.

Air-launched, low-cost, repeatable is basically the trifecta hypersonics has been faking for a decade. Curious what the turnaround time between flights actually looks like in practice.

Adjacent founder here doing reentry vehicles. Air-launch as a testbed is smart, we considered it and chickened out on the integration overhead. Respect.

The tweet cadence buries the lede. 'Meet Ramjet-X' should have been the first line, not paragraph two.

Would love a peek at the recovery scheme. Repeatable is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Any chance you'll share flight data publicly, even partial telemetry? Would help the academic side catch up.

Fast planets, fast. I will be stealing this tagline for my slide deck and I will not apologize.

The B-roll pacing is genuinely cinematic. Whoever cut that video understands that a ramjet inlet is 90% of the pitch.

Skeptical of any 'low-cost' claim that doesn't come with a per-flight number, even a fuzzy one. Otherwise it's aspirational marketing with a nice paint job.

'Too cautious' is such a spicy line to open with. Somebody at a legacy prime just spit out their coffee.

Genuinely curious whether the 'air-launched from Quarterhorse' phrasing means what I think it means. Happy to chat on background if you're feeling generous.

Recruiter hat on: I know two propulsion engineers who left a certain El Segundo shop last month and would sprint at Quarterhorse. DMs open.

The thread structure is odd. Punchy manifesto opener, then it just trails off into a truncated link. Feels like the reveal got clipped.

Reminder that speed without iteration is just a stunt. Iteration without speed is a museum. Hermeus is aiming at the intersection.

Interesting. Ask me again when the second and third articles fly on schedule.

Roadmap suggestion nobody asked for: put a GoPro in the nose and post the raw footage. Instant recruiting funnel.
