Foundry is a company-creation platform for technical founders building physical AI inside the industrial world, launched by a16z and Atlas Holdings to help founders build AI companies inside the industrial world . Rather than start from a pitch deck, selected founders get embedded inside Atlas portfolio businesses in sectors like steel, metals and mining, automotive supply chain, paper and pulp, food, energy and power, and distribution and logistics , working alongside the people who actually run production. The launch is aimed at builders who want proximity to mission-critical operations before writing a line of code for a product. The model centers on a specific operating problem that matters to a real industrial business, with the founder working directly with leadership teams, engineers, operators, and business process owners to understand the workflow, legacy systems, and institutional knowledge that outsiders rarely see. Foundry funds the embedded work and helps with the practical demands of building inside complex industrial businesses , and when the work demonstrates the potential for an enduring independent business, Atlas and a16z will support its creation, with the founder leading it as CEO . That structure is the point of the launch, giving technical founders a path into industry that goes further than a customer intro or a pilot. The effort is being led by Arye Barnehama, who joined Atlas in 2025 to lead Atlas Innovate, which invests in disruptive technologies targeting the industrial sector , in partnership with a16z's American Dynamism practice. For founders considering where to build applied AI, and for investors tracking how physical AI gets distribution, Foundry is a bet that the binding constraint in industry is access and context, and that solving it requires putting technical talent on the factory floor from day one.

The tweet buries the lede at the exact moment the truncation hits. Twitter cliffhanger as marketing strategy, bold choice.

This reminds me of what the Hadrian and Divergent teams were saying three years ago, just packaged as a studio. Curious which operator you pair with the first portco.

ok wait, a holding co plus a16z plus 'industrial world' is basically speedrunning the thesis every GP has been tweeting since 2022. the twist is actually doing it.

The real moat here is Atlas picking up the phone when a founder needs to walk a factory floor on a Tuesday. That access doesn't show up on a pitch deck.

Hot take: most 'AI for industry' startups die because they ship a demo to a plant manager who already hates software. Starting from inside the plant fixes the entire GTM.

'Build where industry lives' is a great tagline until the founder realizes industry lives in a town with one hotel and a Cracker Barrel.

The hook on the launch video is way too soft for a thesis this strong. You've got Atlas scale and you opened with b-roll of a conveyor belt, cmon.

intern question but what does 'formed by' actually mean here. is Foundry a fund, a studio, an operating partner, or a group chat with a logo?

small team question: whats the minimum headcount to actually stand up one of these portcos? three founders and a plant GM on speed dial, or is there a bigger core?

Proximity to the problem beats proximity to the model. Nice to see someone saying it out loud instead of posting another wrapper.

Would love one more thing on the roadmap: a public directory of the actual industrial sites founders can embed in. Make the 'where' legible.

every industrial supply chain eventually begs for a tokenized provenance layer, just saying. not now, but mark the tweet.
