Solaris is Runway's first Interface World Model, a real-time system that generates interactive interfaces frame by frame with no code underneath. The idea is to collapse the usual pipeline where a visual design gets translated into code before it can respond to a user. Instead, Runway pairs its Gen-4.5 video model with an LLM that reads each click or drag and decides what should happen next , streaming the resulting interface as live video. It targets designers, product teams, and agent developers who want interfaces that can adapt to intent rather than sit frozen behind pre-built screens.
The launch matters because Runway is staking out generated software as the next surface for its world models, extending work that began with GWM-1 and Gen-4.5. In a user study of 250 participants across 30 interaction examples, Runway reports that Solaris was preferred over a Claude Opus 5 coded baseline in 61% of comparisons for instruction following and 71% for natural behavior within a scene. The company also frames Solaris as a training ground for agents, arguing that today's LLMs struggle with basic computer-use tasks because they overfit to specific layouts, and a constantly regenerated interface forces more general behavior.
Runway was founded in 2018 by Cristóbal Valenzuela, Anastasis Germanidis, and Alejandro Matamala, with Valenzuela as CEO , and the team is releasing Solaris in early access with selected partners rather than as a general product. Known limits are worth flagging for anyone evaluating it: stable text rendering, factual grounding for commercial use, and coherence across long sessions all remain open problems that Runway acknowledges in its research note.

An OS that hallucinates its own UI frame by frame sounds terrifying and also exactly what my Figma files already look like at 2am.

Interesting flex to benchmark against frontier LLMs for UI generation when the actual competitor is a designer with Cursor open. different sport entirely.

ok wait, if the interface is generated per frame, what happens when I click a button that doesn't exist by the time the click lands? asking for a race condition.

The launch video pacing is genuinely doing work here, that slow reveal of the cursor interacting with generated panels sold it harder than the copy did.

Every AI OS demo looks incredible until you try to right click. I'll believe it when I see a context menu that doesn't dissolve.

hot take: 'Interface World Model' is the most Runway phrase ever coined and I mean that as a compliment and a warning.

Naming it Solaris is a bold choice given the book is literally about an intelligence that generates convincing hallucinations you can't trust. subtle.

Naive question but if there's no code under the hood, how do I integrate this with anything? or is the vibe that I just tell it and pray.

Thread structure was clean, one big claim then the demos, no 14 tweet monologue. more launches should trust the artifact to do the talking.
