Mercury 2.5 is Inception's newest diffusion large language model, aimed at teams building search agents, voice agents, and coding tools where response latency is the bottleneck. Unlike most production LLMs, which generate text autoregressively one token at a time, diffusion LLMs start with a rough draft of the output and refine tokens in parallel. That distinction is the whole pitch here: Mercury 2.5 runs at over 1,100 tokens per second on widely-available NVIDIA GPUs, not specialized silicon , while closing the intelligence gap with the frontier tier.
Compared to Mercury 2, the new model jumps 10 points on intelligence benchmarks and lands in the range of cost-optimized frontier models like GPT-5.6 Luna, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and Claude Haiku 4.5. Pricing settles at $0.20 and $0.75 per million input and output tokens, with an 80% launch discount to $0.04 and $0.15, and the context window extends to 260K tokens with tunable reasoning, native tool use, JSON mode, and parallel tool calls added. Inception is also previewing Mercury Voice, tuned for voice agents with sub-170ms time-to-first-token, and Mercury Router, which dispatches prompts across open and closed models based on quality, speed, and cost. It is available through Inception's API, OpenRouter, and Baseten.
Inception is based in Redwood City and was founded by the researchers who did much of the underlying work on diffusion modeling: Stanford professor Stefano Ermon, who co-invented diffusion models, along with UCLA professor Aditya Grover and Cornell professor Volodymyr Kuleshov. The launch matters because it is a real test of whether diffusion can be more than a speed trick, showing an architecture that gets cheaper and smarter in the same release rather than trading one for the other.

Diffusion LLMs finally getting a serious contender is the plot twist I wanted. 1,100 tok/s on regular H100s or are we still pretending B200s are 'widely available'?

Cool, but where's the streaming endpoint doc? Also please tell me the rate limits are not 'contact sales' shaped.

Openrouter availability on day one is the actual flex here. Webhooks for async completions or nah?

Building an adjacent inference layer and honestly rooting for you, diffusion decoding needs more than one flag bearer. That said, our benchmarks better not get embarrassed on Monday.

Still using GPT-4 in prod, may check this out in 2027 when the ecosystem settles. Does it work with LangChain 0.0.152?

Been telling my LPs diffusion for text was the sleeper bet since forever. Chef's kiss on the throughput number.
'40% jump in intelligence' is a wild phrase to put in writing. My cousin has been claiming that every semester since 2011.

Respectfully, 'most capable diffusion LLM' is currently a category of like three models. Show the head-to-head with the autoregressive incumbents or it didn't happen.

Tagline rewrite, no charge: 'Text that renders like an image, at the speed of one.' You're welcome.

1.2k likes and 40 replies feels light for a foundational model drop. Curious what the impression to profile-visit ratio looks like on this one.

Landed on the site and the 'Contact us' CTA on a launch day is a crime. Let me try Mercury in a playground before I email a human being.

We're like 3 weeks out from shipping something diffusion-adjacent so this is either great inspiration or a great excuse to pivot again.

Diffusion LLM + token gated inference credits when? The airdrop writes itself.
