Firecrawl is launching a free Government and Legal Index that ChatGPT, Claude, and custom agents can search when a question depends on a US statute, tax rule, permit, or court opinion. The index covers 30 million pages from federal, state, county, and city sites, including regulations, agency guidance, zoning codes, court opinions, tax forms, and fee schedules, and every result links to the original page. Official text is already public, but it is spread across thousands of government websites, and a general search often stops at a law firm summary, a forum thread, or a page that only points somewhere else. Founders checking local permit rules, operators reading a fee schedule, and teams building tax, compliance, or legal research tools can run those searches from the Firecrawl plugin in ChatGPT and Claude. Developers can use the same index through the /search/gov API, the firecrawl_gov_search tool in Firecrawl's hosted MCP server, and the firecrawl gov CLI command. Searches use no credits. Coverage is limited to the United States for now, and Firecrawl says a match is not proof that a rule is current or that it applies to a specific case. The index sits in Alexandria beside Firecrawl's Developer Index and Research Index. Firecrawl is a San Francisco company from Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch, founded by Caleb Peffer, Eric Ciarla, and Nicolas Silberstein Camara, who previously built Mendable. Its API turns live web pages into clean text and structured data for language models and agents.
