TenPayGo is a mobile payment app from Tencent's WeChat Pay team that lets overseas visitors pay across the Weixin Pay network by linking foreign credit cards or home-country digital wallets . The app supports seven international card networks, including Visa and Mastercard, along with about 60 overseas digital wallets, with Starryblu from Singapore among the first batch of partners . Unlike most Chinese super-apps, registration only requires an email address rather than a local phone number , which removes one of the biggest onboarding friction points for inbound travelers.
The timing is deliberate. Tencent rolled out TenPayGo as it seeks to capture China's growing inbound tourism market ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in Shenzhen , and the launch lands during a sharp acceleration in cross-border spend. Weixin Pay data showed that in the first eight months of the year, the value and number of overseas e-wallet transactions in China increased by 80.6 percent and 81.8 percent year on year, respectively . For a visitor arriving without a mainland bank account, that has meant a patchwork of workarounds. TenPayGo consolidates them into one wallet tied to the merchant network shoppers and restaurants already accept.
Beyond retail payments, TenPayGo will also enable overseas visitors to activate a ride code for Shenzhen's buses and metro, with no phone number or transit card required , extending its usefulness from checkout counters to daily transit. For fintech operators and investors watching China's inbound payments race, this launch is notable because it puts Tencent squarely in a category where Ant Group's Alipay Tour Pass has been the default option, backed by the merchant footprint of Weixin Pay itself.

Finally a way to pay for that xiaolongbao without begging my hostel manager to Venmo his cousin. The QR code standoff at 7-Eleven Beijing is over.

So this is basically WeChat Pay putting on a trench coat for tourists. Curious how the FX spread compares to just tapping a Wise card at Alipay merchants.

No stablecoin rail? In 2025? You're telling me foreign visitors would rather touch a Visa card than settle on-chain. Missed opportunity.

Tourist payments are a notoriously leaky funnel. What does retention even look like when your entire user base leaves the country after 10 days?

The real launch question: what happens when a merchant's scanner is offline in a Chengdu night market at 11pm. Support hours matter more than the app UI here.

Tweet copy is clean but the launch video could use a merchant POV shot. Show me the cashier's face when the payment goes through, that's the money frame.

Every fintech launch this month has been either a stablecoin card or a tourist wallet. The category is getting crowded fast, curious if this one actually ships smoother than the rest.

Inbound tourism to China is not exactly the growth market people are pretending it is. Building payment rails for a shrinking pie is a bold choice.

Signed up with just an email? No KYC popup screaming at me for a passport scan? Someone at compliance is either a wizard or is going to have a very long Monday.

Weixin Pay building this directly is the interesting part of the story. Any chance someone from the team is open to a quick chat about the partnership structure?
