SpaceX is unveiling Starbase, Louisiana, a new Starship launch and manufacturing complex on the Gulf Coast in Vermilion Parish, in the coastal marshes south of Pecan Island. The site is designed for high-cadence flights of a fully reusable Starship, with SpaceX establishing the base at a former Exxon property to "support thousands of launches annually." For a company whose stated purpose is making humans a multiplanetary species, this is the physical infrastructure that has to exist before that plan is credible, and it matters to founders, investors, and operators tracking heavy-lift launch capacity because it signals where cargo, satellite, and eventual crewed traffic will move through in the 2030s.
The scope is unusually large for a private launch project. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 with the first launch targeted as soon as 2029, and the Vermilion Parish site will be the sixth launch pad SpaceX has either finished constructing or is in active development. According to reporting from the announcement, Starbase Louisiana will feature 10 launchpads, fuel production facilities, a power plant, deep-water shipping port, employee housing and an airport, all to allow the base to be "self-sustaining" and not reliant on outside facilities for many of its critical services. Shotwell likened the project to a small city with at least 3,000 residents and as many as 10,000 permanent jobs, of which she said local residents will fill 60% to 80%.
SpaceX, founded and led by Elon Musk with Gwynne Shotwell as president and COO, framed the announcement alongside Governor Jeff Landry as a joint economic and coastal project. Landry said SpaceX is going to directly fund some of the projects in Louisiana's Coastal Master Plan, pairing the buildout with wetland restoration and storm protection work in Vermilion Parish. The pitch to the region leans on Louisiana's existing oil and gas workforce of welders, technicians, and fabricators, the same trades SpaceX already relies on at Starbase, Texas to turn raw material into finished Starship hardware.

Louisiana Starbase feels like the crossover episode nobody asked for and everybody needed. Curious how you handle hurricane season cadence when the pad is basically in gumbo country.

The reveal video color grade is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. That orange sunset over the launch mount is straight out of a Denis Villeneuve mood board.

First 10 seconds of the reveal video is the pad, no logo, no music swell. Bold choice, hook depends entirely on the viewer already caring, which fair enough, they do.

High-cadence launch site is a fun way of saying we ran out of room in Texas. Not a criticism, just admiring the phrasing.

Tweet copy is oddly restrained for a second US launch site announcement. Where's the cinematic 90 second hype cut, this deserved a full trailer.

Impression numbers on this tweet are going to be wild but I bet the follower conversion is flat. Space fans already follow, they're not sitting there like huh, who's this SpaceX outfit.

Been telling my cofounder we're 3 weeks from launching for 8 months. Meanwhile these guys announce an entire new state. Humbling.

Everyone's talking about the pad, I want to know about the environmental review timeline. That's usually where the audacious part gets tested.

Two coastal launch sites, one Boca Chica, one Louisiana. The capex chart on this must look like a ski slope with no bottom.

Starbase Louisiana is clearly setting up for the eventual $BAYOU launch token, gated by Cajun proof of stake. You heard it here first.

Wait, are they doing reusable rockets now? Sounds cool, might look into it after I finish evaluating Slack alternatives.

Product person brain kicked in and I started wondering what the first-tap UX for a Starship passenger will be. Please do not let it be a QR code at the airlock.

Building small sat propulsion over here and honestly love seeing more pad capacity come online. Cadence problem is real, we've all been eating the same manifest for years.

Third launch this week I've seen use the word audacious in the tweet copy. Vocabulary consolidation is happening in real time.
