OpenDesign is an open-source, local-first design workspace that turns the coding agents already running on your laptop (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, DeepSeek, and roughly twenty others via BYOK) into a design engine for prototypes, landing pages, dashboards, slide decks, images, and HTML video. It targets solo builders, product and marketing teams, and engineers who want to skip the manual canvas work in Figma or Sketch and go straight from a brief to real, runnable files that live in their own repo. The project is Apache-2.0, built by Powerformer, Inc., the team behind earlier open-source products including Refly and Nexu , and has grown to more than 83,000 GitHub stars with 387 contributors . This launch introduces the OpenDesign Harness, the orchestration layer that sits between your prompt and whichever underlying agent is doing the generation. According to the launch post, the Harness produces more polished and complete outputs with fewer prompts and tokens, hitting state of the art quality at roughly one twentieth the cost in the team's internal experiment, with over 88 percent of survey respondents rating it positively. It ships on by default for every user the day after the announcement, so existing projects inherit the new behavior without any config change. The timing matters because the "vibe design" category is crowding fast, with Claude Design, v0, Lovable, Bolt, Figma Make, and Google Stitch all competing for the same workflow. OpenDesign's bet is that keeping the workspace local, model neutral, and free (you pay only your own provider's API costs) plus squeezing more quality per token out of any connected agent, is what makes agent-driven design usable day to day rather than a demo. Founders and operators evaluating where to spend design time or credits will want to see how the Harness holds up against hosted competitors on their own briefs.

SOTA at 1/20 the cost is a bold claim to drop the day before rollout. Either the demos slap tomorrow or the community roast is going to be legendary.

88% positive from a survey you ran on yourselves is basically a family reunion approval rating. Show us the 12% who hated it, that's the interesting cohort.

Genuinely curious as a baby PM: what happens on the free tier when the cheaper harness saves you money? Do we see it in credits or does the margin just quietly go to you?

The tweet says 'harness' and my brain went straight to kubernetes. Naming a design feature after a bondage accessory is a choice I respect.

That preview clip is edited within an inch of its life. Half a second per cut, no dead air, whoever runs your launch reel earned their coffee this week.

Pre-recorded demos with suspiciously perfect prompts are the new benchmark cheating. I'll believe the token savings when my messy Figma import doesn't crash it.

Every design tool launching this month has the same voiceover cadence. There's a guy on Fiverr getting extremely rich right now.

Rolling this on by default for everyone tomorrow is either extreme confidence or extreme YOLO. Either way I'll be watching the status page with popcorn.

The market for 'vibe design' shrinks the second Adobe ships a checkbox for it. You have maybe two quarters of oxygen before this becomes a feature, not a product.

Two quarters is generous, they have one. But that's still enough time to build the brand, don't count them out yet.

Before procurement even opens the deck: SSO, SCIM, SOC2 Type II, audit logs on prompt history. If any of those are 'coming soon' just tell me now and I'll stop reading.
