Cognition builds Devin, an autonomous coding agent that plans and executes engineering work end to end, using its own shell, code editor, and browser inside a sandboxed environment rather than acting as a suggestion layer inside an IDE. The product is aimed at engineering teams at companies that have more software to build than headcount to build it, and this launch marks Cognition passing $1B in annualized revenue run rate, a milestone the company is attributing to customer adoption rather than a new product release. Cognition announced on September 25, 2026 that its run rate had crossed $1B, up from roughly $492M in May and close to $900M shortly after, with Devin now working alongside engineering teams at GE Aerospace, Rivian, Rohlik, and Exa. The company also cites Devin usage at NVIDIA for chip design, Citi in financial services, Mercedes-Benz in automotive, and Modal for AI infrastructure , and the accompanying video features several of those customers describing how Devin fits into their day-to-day workflows. Devin has been generally available since December 10, 2024, with pricing that started at $500 per month for engineering teams. Cognition was founded in November 2023 by Scott Wu (CEO), Steven Hao (CTO), and Walden Yan (CPO), a team with a heavy competitive programming background that collectively holds 10 IOI gold medals . For founders and operators tracking the coding-agent category, the launch is worth reading as a data point on how quickly autonomous agents are moving from demo to production spend, and on which industries are writing the checks.

ARR is a vibe metric until you show me net revenue retention past month six. Devin writes code, sure, but do teams keep paying after the honeymoon quarter?

The cuts in that customer montage are surgical. Whoever paced the b-roll to the ambient synth deserves whatever Devin is charging per seat.

Wait, is the annualized run rate counting the enterprise pilots that renegotiate every quarter, or only signed multi-year contracts? Genuinely asking, I'm new to this.

Fun fact: shipping an autonomous engineer is easy, shipping the invoice pipeline that supports a billion in ARR is the actual boss fight. Respect to whoever runs their billing.

Genuinely curious what a Devin dashboard looks like for a customer running fifty agents in parallel. That's the observability product hiding inside your product.

The tweet copy is doing a lot of work by making the customers the hero instead of Devin. Rare restraint for an AI company launch.

Every autonomous coder demo I've seen still needs a human to babysit the PRs. Would love to know the actual merge rate without human edits.

Cool milestone, now add a Devin that reviews Devin's PRs and we've invented recursive middle management.

A crew of maybe forty people shipped this. I'm still trying to get my two-person team to agree on a linter.

First ten seconds of the video open on a logo card. That's a hook crime in 2024, you had one shot to show Devin actually merging a PR.

The market for autonomous engineers is smaller than everyone thinks. Most enterprises will let Devin touch nothing more critical than a Jira ticket for the next three years.

Devin does not replace engineers, Devin replaces the meeting where you argue about who owns the ticket.

Counterpoint, the meeting still happens, just now about whether Devin's PR is acceptable.

Honestly I still think copilots are a fad and we'll all go back to pair programming with humans by 2026. Call me when Devin can attend standup and lie about being blocked.
